Primarily demobilize, injure, and kill. Lethal gases that were used were tear gas, chlorine, and mustard gas. Gas masks were used to combat the gases.

Trench Warfare
Trench Warfare was mainly used during World War 1 as a source of protection when the enemy was attacking. However, trench life was harsh, and was a source of some of the casualties that resulted from World War 1. Trenches are long, narrow ditches in the ground where the soldiers lived everyday, during both night and day of war. Soldiers were sheltered from artillery

Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme was a battle of the First World War fought by the armies of the British Empire and France against the German Empire. It took place between July 1-18 November 1916 on both sides of the upper reaches of the River Somme in France. The battle was intended to hasten a victory for the Allies and was the largest battle of the First World War on the Western Front. More than three million men fought in this battle and one million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history.
